John Abraham’s maiden home production Vicky Donor, based on the concept of sperm donation and infertility, has finally released. The film stars Annu Kapoor and new comers Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam in the lead roles. The movie is directed by Soojit Sarkar, and let’s see how it fares.
Story:
Dr Chadda(Annu Kapoor) runs an infertility clinic and sperm bank in Delhi. He treats couples who are childless. A time comes when Dr Chadda has more failed cases to his credit than successes. A healthy, high-performing donor is the need of the hour. Dr Chadda starts looking for Sperm Donors and comes across Vicky (Ayushmann) a young guy from Delhi, who has no job and helps his mom in her beauty clinic. At first Vicky is very reluctant to help Dr chadda, but after lot of persuasion given in. What happens to Vicky when he starts donating sperms? What circumstances is he pushed into? and how does he come out of his problems forms the rest of the story.
Plus Points:
Script is the highlight, and the makers have chosen a very interesting subject. Soojit Sarkar makes out a very simple and humorous story out of a diverse subject like Sperm donation. This is VJ turned actor Ayushman Khuranna’s first movie, and he has played his role naturally and doesn’t make us feel that it is his first film. He has all the trappings of a star in the making. Annu Kapoor is the highlight of the movie. He brings in lot of humor to his character with his one liner’s and gestures. Television actress Yami Gautam makes an impressive debut and is truly admirable towards the latter part of the film. First half of the movie has many hilarious moments, especially the scenes between hero’s mother and grandmother. The interactions between the principal characters, Annu Kapoor and Ayshman khuranna all through out the movie, are highly entertaining and will make you burst out in laughter.
Minus Points:
Music in the film could have been better as there is only one song in the movie. Second half of the movie becomes a little slow and gets a little predictable. Some double meaning dialogues could have been avoided.
Technical Aspects:
Cinematography is good and depicts the middle class Delhi in a very unique way. Editing is apt. The dialogues are quite simple and are more like normal conversations. One liner’s which Annu Kappor says in the movie are very innovative. A special mention for the screenplay, which is very tight and doesn’t let your attention wander from the scene. Direction is very good and Soojit Sarkar has succeeded in making a simple story revolve around three characters very beautifully and without being preachy.
Verdict:
On the whole, VICKY DONOR is a small film with a huge heart. The makers have succeeded to bring a diverse issue out in the open, narrating a daringly different story. Witty, funny and also emotional, VICKY DONOR hugely entertains with its tight script and hugely funny scenes. It has once again been proved that without any big names and exotic locations, a good story aided by good performances will always sell. Go watch it!
