Music Review : Cocktail (Full on entertaining Album)

It’s been quite some time since we have seen Saif Ali khan in a romantic movie. After a long gap, he has come up with a triangular love story featuring Deepika Padukone and debutant Diana Penty. Music of the film is composed by Pritam and has already hit the music channels. This movie is directed by Homi Adajania and has lyrics are by Irshad Kamil. Music of this much awaited flick has hit the stores and lets see how it is.

Song 1 : Tum Hi Ho Bandhu

Singers : Neeraj Srishar, Kavita Seth

Lyrics : Irshad Kamil

Analysis : The album begins with the song ‘Tum Hi Ho Bandhu’ which is a typical urban mix. Neeraj Sridhar does full justice to this song with his youthful and urban voice. He nicely mixes up the Hindi and English lyrics with some catchy singing. Best part of the song is the voice of Kavita Seth who has a very earthy and classical voice right throughout the song. Music of the song has a total club beat and is very energetic. Already the promos have hit the music channels and the signature dance steps in the song, will only increase its popularity. On the whole Tu Hi Ho Bandhu is a totally rocking peppy number.

Song2: Daru Desi

Singers: Benny Dayal, Shalmali Kholgade’s

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil

Analysis : The album continues with the song Daru Desi which is perfect fun loving song with casual lyrics. Pritam uses high Guitar notes and basic beats for this song. This song is sung beautifully by Benny Dayal and Shamali. Lyrics are very young at heart and are funny. Though the song grows on you slowly, this is a kind of a chilled out song, which you would listen on your I-pods and music systems. A total time pass simple fun loving song.

Song 3 : Second Hand Jawani

Singers : Neha Kakkar,Miss Pooja, Nakkash Aziz.

Lyrics : Irshad Kamil

Analysis : The next song in the album is Second Hand Jawani, which is full on mass song with hip-hop beats. The song is a bit loud when you listen to it first, but slowly grows on you once you listen to it twice or thrice. Punjabi singer Miss Pooja sings this song in her basic item number voice and does full justice. The song has basic hip-hop beats going throughout the song. This song will be liked more once you watch it’s video. Lyrics are total time pass with words like Second Hand Jawani and so on. This is full on dance number you would love to groove on.

Song 4 : Tera Naam Japdi Phiran

Singers: Javed Bashir, Shefali Alvaris,Nikhil D’souza

Lyrics : Irshad Kamil
Analysis: The fourth song in the album is Tera Naam Japdi, which is total Punjabi club mix. This song has Punjabi, English and Hindi lyrics mixed together beautifully. Shefali renders the English lyrics beautifully and the sound of the song reminds you of some of the recent western tracks. Songs like these are a regular feature in Pritam’s music albums. This song reminds you of the song Gaddi De Has Boldi in Saif’s ‘Love Aaj Kal’. An instant hit with the younger generation this song is very catchy and peppy with its rocking club beats in the background.

Song 5: Jugni

Singers: Arif Lohar, Harshdeep Kaur

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Analysis: The album continues with ‘Jugni’ whose rights were bought by the makers of the movie form a Pakistani Singer. Luckily they haven’t twisted it or rearranged it more. Jugni is a total Punjabi Rock based song and the lyrics are totally in Punjabi. The song has natural heavy duty rock beats with soothing voice of Harshdeep Kaur in the background which the original dint have. A full on hard core Punjabi rock song, this song might not be liked by everyone.

Song 6: Lutna

Singers: Masuma Anwar, Sahir Ali Bagga, Anupam Amod

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Analysis: Next song in the album is Lutna, which is a totally innovative song. Pritam has chosen innovative sounds and has mixed heavy beats with the Sufi feel of the song. An interesting combination, Pritam succeeds in blending two genres together. Lyrics are very romantic and carry the whole love story in the song. More or less Pritam’s fixation with Punjabi flavor still continues with this song too. Sahir Ali’s sufiana style singing is the highlight of the whole song. This is a very different kind of a song with a fusion of different genres of music which is worth listening.

Song 7: Main Sharabi

Singers: Imran Aziz Mian and Yo Yo Honey Singh

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil
Analysis: This is the best song of the album which is a superb peppy dance number. You would like it instantly after you hear it for the first time. Total Dhamaal song with hard core disco beats and funny Punjabi Rapping all over the song. This number is specially created to promote the music in the night clubs and disco techs. Honey Singh’s Punjabi rapping is very funny and catchy. A basic peppy and full on dance number Main Sharbi will surely be a bigger hit once the movie releases.

Song 8: Yaarian

Singers: Mohan Kanan and Shilpa Rao

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil

Analysis: This is the last song in the album and thankfully is a romantic number sung by Mohan Kanan and Shilpa Rao. This song has heavy guitar notes with high pitch voices from both the singers in the start. A total romantic number ‘Yaarian’ sounds like a total montage song. Lyrics of this song are written in order to move the story ahead in the movie. A simple and soothing romantic number Yaarian is one of the most decent track in the album.

Verdict: On the whole as expected Pritam comes up with a superb music album which has everything for the listeners. Music of Cocktail is young, fresh and hugely peppy. Tum Hi Ho Bandhu, Daru Desi and Main Sharabi will surely be chart busters. This is surely one of the best music albums of the current times and is surely enjoyable. Pritam and Saif Ali Khan have a sure winner on their hands in Cocktail’s music album.

Go buy yourself a CD now.
