Interview – Parineeti Chopra

The young and bubbly Parineeti Chopra has successfully proved her mettle as a good actress in the few movies she has done till date such as ‘Ishqzaade’ and ‘Shudh Desi Romance’. Though she faced a lot of criticism for her voluptuous figure, her talent soon had the critics falling in line. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood3, Parineeti shares how she would love to be counted in the list of slim actresses and how she is working hard towards that goal!

1. Tell us something about your character in ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’?

A: Mita is basically a scientist. She comes up with inventions and is very intelligent, but at the same time a little weird, like the way intellectuals usually are. My character also has a few characteristics that makes it weird. Like I always keep my eyes wide open and rarely blink, my nose is always twitching and I always keep hitting something always in the film. I am like an expressionless robot in the movie. You will get to know more about it, when you watch ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’.

2. How much did you have to work on this character?

A. Well, for this character, we did not have a reference. Nobody has played a character like this ever. We have seen mentally challenged characters in films like Barfi and My Name Is Khan, where the person has some or the other medical issues, but in this, Mita does not have a medical issue. There is just something weird about her. We had to experiment with things.

3. Hasee Toh Phasee is your fourth film and till date, you have only done non-glamorous roles. Do you select such roles on purpose?

A: No No…Not at all! When your career starts, you cannot be choosy about roles. I don’t do such big planning. With my first film, I had no choice and I had to take that role. Apart from that, in Ishaqzaade, I didn’t even think about the glamour quotient. I knew that if I perform in the film well, it will take me places and get me a lot of movies. Shuddh Desi Romance was Maneesh’s film and I can’t say no to him. I was dying to work with him again. Again in Hasee Toh Phasee, the character was so interesting that I had to do it. But it is not a conscious decision to do non-glam roles, I want to do glamorous roles and will definitely do it sometime. Probably in Kill Dil, which I have just signed. I just need to have a right body to carry glamorous roles, which I am currently working on.

4. So will we be seeing you in a bikini soon?

A. Bikini is not there in the film because it is not required. Otherwise, I hope you get to see my new look in Kill Dil.

5. You are playing a geek in the movie. So did you ever go through a geek phase in your life?

A. Oh, I was a geek. Infact up until class 12th, I was always in the top three and was always made the head girl. Even when I went to Manchester to study, I was the only Indian in the world chosen for the course. So, I was always one of those top students.

6. What are the advantages of starting as a Yash Raj girl and now bagging the next Dharma Productions project?

A. I think, you get a mental security with such big banners. You know that your movie will not stop in-between. You will be marketed well and will be introduced to the industry well. It is a dream start. Working with both the banners was similar to me, the only difference was working in their offices as the two follow a dissimilar system.

7. Tell us about your experience of working with Sidharth Malhotra?

A. Oh it was lovely! Sid is a very nice guy. Very chivalrous, very out-spoken and calm. Everybody used to think that because we are two different people, how will we able to gel along, but the exact opposite happened. I had a lovely experience working with him. He is very intelligent and so it’s nice to talk to him. We are also similar in our up-bringing. We both belong to a north Indian, lower middle-class families.

8. What is the one quality that Sidharth possesses that you don’t?

A. I think he is very sorted in the head. His peace of mind. Nothing ever hassles him.

9. How was it working with Vinil Mathew, the director ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’?

A. Lovely! He has directed around 300 ad films, so he exactly knows what he wants from his actors. Actually Sid and I used to rag him a lot.

10. Is it that you are staying away from working with senior actors, as you had also said no to working with Akshay Kumar?

A. No. It is not at all the case. I said no to the movie because I had nothing to do in it. I had like around 10-15 days shoot, but I wanted a great role for it.

11. It is said that Parineeti is a major competitor for the young brigade of the industry. Does this expectation pressurize you at all?

A. Ya it is a little scary! At the moment, people have this opinion, but it is a scary feeling that this might get over soon.

12. Your future set of projects?

A. I have Daawat-e-Ishq with Aditya Roy Kapur, then there is Kill Dil opposite Ranveer Singh and there is another movie, but that hasn’t been announced yet.

13. Lastly, how much do you believe in the line, ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ and have you ever been the target of it?

A. No. If that would have been the case, I would have had a boyfriend today, which I don’t.

On that bright note, we ended our interview with Parineeti while wishing the best of luck with ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ and all her future projects!
